I am looking for some creative ideas for a dining hall party at a university focused on sustainability. Last year, we hosted an Iron Chef-style competition featuring locally-grown produce and local chefs to educate students on the importance of eating locally. This year's party will coincide with the end of RecycleMania (a 10-week long competition among universities to recycle the most). The event could tie in with this, but it needs to also emphasize the broader idea of sustainability (not just recycling). Any thoughts are much appreciated to get the creative juices flowing.
Thanks,

Hi -
A thought for the dining hall party I don't know if this can be your total focus, but as a part of it, you can try to make the event have 0 carbon footprint. At the Toronto Zoo, we had a party for staff in November to celebrate the launch of our Green Plan, among other exciting events at the Zoo. We connected with Bullfrog power, who offset the power used as well as the travel for the speakers who came. Food was served on compostable plates and we had compostable cutlery (you may not need this if you have enough proper plates and cutlery - we don't). Everything else was in recyclable containers. As it turns out the only non-recyclable or compostable waste we had were those little plastic bits on the ends of the toothpicks in the sandwiches.
Hope this is helpful!

Perhaps you could go Slow Food for the event. Check www.slowfood.com . Local, organic and fresh!

As part of your party you could have a "trash to fashion" show - see the link below for one that has been very successfully carried out in New Zealand - contestants create fashion out of recycled product with quite amazing results as you will see - fits with your RecycleMania competition and is loads of fun http://www.waitakere.govt.nz/ArtCul/ae/trashtofashion/index.asp#categories
