Hi Marlene,
Our local Clean Air Agencies have implemented anti-idling programs in communities of all sizes. Airwatch Northwest's website has an extensive toolkit with downloadable materials for anti-idling campaigns. They mainly target schools--a great place to start. If you scroll down, you will find reports with case studies. Here's the link: http://www.airwatchnorthwest.org/anti-idling.htm Hope this helps.
Best,
Melanie

Hi Marlene,
To find out what other communities have been doing in Canada to reduce idling, visit http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/idling/index.cfm?fuseaction=ralenti.campagnes&attr=28. You'll be able to perform a search based on criteria you select (e.g. province/territory, population of community, type of community, type of project, and budget). In time we hope to be able to add many more project result details to this site. I also invite you to have a look at other pages of Natural Resources Canada's Idling-Free Zone web site http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/ralenti/ralenti.cfm?attr=28 which is dedicated to helping communities and environmental groups to reduce vehicle idling in an effort to conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Hello Marlene,
I am currently running such a program in Waterloo, ON for an organization called Reduce the Juice. It is a much larger community (100,000) however we are only addressing one section of the city. We have hired 15 students (2 university and 13 high school) to do both door to door and broader outreach through local farmer's markets and neighbourhood festivals. Our project involves a doorstep survey and if the homeowner is willing to participate, a pledge to reduce emissions from various actions (one is reducing idling). We will follow up this project with a school based anti-idling program which will involve one high school and three elementary schools. The high school students will design and implement an anti-idling campaign targeted at parents and then will mentor the elementary schools to do the same thing. You can check out our website or contact me and I can provide more detailed info. We have done similar projects in small communities in the past on energy conservation and found them to be quite successful. www.reducethejuice.ca
