Have you looked at Algalita http://www.algalita.org/
They have the synthetic seas video about the North Pacific Gyre and plastics in the ocean. on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVwuPSLx2Xc
You might also find some interesting info at the CA Coastal Comission website.

Another excellent resource on this issue is Sea Studios Foundation (seastudios.org), which made (among other things) the PBS series Strange Days On Planet Earth. They have compelling film and video about marine debris, and are becoming more active in the area of plastics in the ocean.

Try the 60 Minutes Australia website which recently ran a story about the plastic soup in the Pacific.
Planet Ark and Are You Ready websites would also be worth a look.
