Maui is one of the 6 main inhabited islands of the Hawaii archipelago. Despite having an endless supply of sun, wind, wave, and geothermal energy, great climate and soils for growing food, regular rainfall in some parts of the island, and surrounded by reefs and ocean, Maui's energy, food, and water security policies are archaic, waste management shameful to say the least, and sustainable transportation systems, much to be desired. Since July, Maui County has had in their budget, funds for a Sustainability Coordinator position within the department of Environmental Management, but their seems to be no urgency on their part to bid the position.

I would love to see someone from this group with a strong background in sustainable living solutions for tropical islands encourage the County to fill this position immediately with someone who can guide their decision making with examples of programs that have proven to be successful in very similar environments. With less than 200,000 people, Maui has the potential to be a global example of sustainable living but currently we the leadership and expertise. I'm hoping someone in this group can help change that.
