Stormwater run-off - Changing Behaviours in the City

Hello Denika.  I have been working on the application of community-based social marketing to stormwater issues for over 15 years, mostly in Southern California (USA).  We have used the approach to address a wide range of water quality topics including pet waste management, irrigation runoff, coastal business washing behaviors, and more.  I've attached two brief case studies for you here -- one addressing pet waste and one addressing irrigation runoff. Both of these included strategies that were developed to directly address identified barriers and perceived benefits using tools such as prompts, social norms, and personal communication.  Each also used observational measures to evaluate the efficacy of the approaches compared to a control area that received either no outreach or information only.  Our work with coastal businesses is summarized in the book Social Marketing to Protect the Environment: What Works.  That book includes other case studies from other agencies that have addressed water quality behaviors using approaches beyond information.  Most recently, we have been using flow meters installed at stormwater outfalls to assess the impact of various outreach strategies on actual flow.  I don't have anything written up to share , but would be happy to speak with you more about our efforts.  We are currently working on separate CBSM efforts addressing FOG, pesticide use, irrigation runoff, and illegal dumping. 

Check out EPA's NPS Tool Box https://cfpub.epa.gov/npstbx/ , some of the info is dated but there are some studies and examples there.  Also try Bangor Area Stormwater Group (BASWG.org) for storm drain stenciling info.  They worked with a consultant to test their storm drain design and are using social marketing.
