Hi all,

As we near the end of 2023, I'd like to say a few words about empathy. Empathy is a perhaps overlooked yet critically important aspect of the work that we do as behaviour change professionals. In the context of a behaviour change program, it starts with checking our unconscious biases about the priority group during the planning process. And it goes far beyond reading and interpreting the results of research about the priority group, the problem they are facing, and the most effective behavioural levers to apply. It means imagining what it would be like to be in their shoes, to be having their particular experience. What are they thinking and feeling? What do they really need? When we approach the priority group with empathy, I think we will be much more likely to work with them instead of on or for them. By doing so, we may discover intrinsic motivators for change along the way.

In 2024, I wish for all of you that empathy will guide your professional and personal lives. There can be no doubt that we need more of that in this world.

My very best wishes for the holidays and in the new year.

Sincerely,
Julie
