Hi All,
I and a colleague are searching for a book on Sustainable Business Practices for a class we are teaching at a community college that emphasizes the practical over the theoretical. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

There are so many books out there I have stopped writing down the references! Here are three which I bought along the way: The NEXT Sustainability Wave: Building Boardroom Buy-in by Bob Willard How we are moving from the drivers of: personal passion, public relations crisis, and regulatory pressure to: the "perfect storm" of market forces and compelling business value. ISBN 0865715327 Holistic Management: A New Framework for Decision Making by Allan Savory Ostensibly about eco-system management, the parallels to business are so obvious and good it's mind boggling. ISBN 155963488X Sustainable Solutions: Developing Products and Service for the Future. Editors: Martin Charter and Ursula Tischner. This is a collection of chapters contributed by domain experts. It is not a text but a course could be based on it ISBN 1874719365 Please let us know what other recommendations you receive!

Try "The Sustainability Revolution" (New Society Publishers, 2005) by Andres Edwards. It's an excellent sustainability encyclopedia; very readable and practical. I'm using it in a class I teach at a community college.

Here is a link to a practical handbook we put together for food service. Many of the concepts and ideas can be applied to other business practices. Seattle Central Community College Culinary Academy is using it for their sustainable program. http://www.quillisascutcheese.com/Rethinking%20the%20Kitchen_FINAL%20WEB.pdf

I use Bill McDonough's book, Cradle to Cradle because the students continue to love it.

Gary- They should get in touch with either Bainbridge Graduate Institute up in Seattle or the New College in SF for some recommendations for a good teaching tool (also, they should check out Joel's column about the subject at

David:
Thanks for a great posting. I've added a few books to my "wish list" as well. My recommendations: Elkington, J. (1998). Cannibals with Forks., Gabriola Island, BC: New Society Publishers. Holliday, C., Schmidheiny, S. & Watts, P. (2002). Walking the Talk-The Business Case for Sustainable Development. Sheffield, UK: GreenLeaf Publishing. A quick read and one that's very 'easy' and comprehensible is Pam Gordon's book. Check out Technology Forecaster's website, you'll see her (she's the Exec) and her book featured there. (I'm just blanking on the title of the book). Another one that's 'meatier' is the one by Michael Braungart - its even printed on recycleable 'plastic' paper. I read it underwater! Its cool! Again, blanking on the title... I'll send you another note with book titles later...
