I am hoping that listserv members can point me towards studies or resources that will be helpful in answering the following questions:
1) Over the last 5-10 years, what have been the changes in the mix of media that people pay attention to and that people use to obtain information?
2) What is known about the current mix of media used by different age groups, different socioeconomic groups and different ethnic groups?

We published a report last fall on the meaning, use and impact of socially responsible media and communications here in the US -- it's called "The Colors of Perception". We interviewed non profits, and small and large companies across a variety of sectors from food & beverage to manufacturing to the media itself. A number of people asked me to share the responses to the following two questions that I posted recently:
1) Over the last 5-10 years, what have been the changes in the mix of media that people pay attention to and that people use to obtain information?
2) What is known about the current mix of media used by different age groups, different socioeconomic groups and different ethnic groups?
The responses were as follows:
1. Viswanath, K. (2005, October). The communications revolution and cancer control. Nature Reviews Cancer, 26, 828-834.
2. Advertising Age has published a lot on this topic in the last two years. They have been upgrading their website so you probably can find some of the reports posted there.
3. there is a ton of information in the private sector on these issues. if you search through advertising age, brand week, marketing week, marketing and media decisions you'll find studies. also sources like mmri and simmons will have annual studies. i'd go to a journalism department of a university and talk to people who teach advertising and ask them about relevant sources. i'd also call a local ad agency and ask for the media department with these questions. there are very specific answers to your questions, and they are easily available.
4. The National Cancer Institute began a national survey of health information trends. The second wave of data is about to be released. They have written several articles and prepared several reports on the first data that you can access at: http:// cancercontrol.cancer.gov/hints/results.jsp
5. The Kaiser Family Foundation has a lot of research and research summaries on media use, and would probably be a good starting place. http://kff.org/entmedia/index.cfm
6. There is a review written for the Australia Greenhouse Office which has a section on sources of information people refer to. You can obtain the entire article from: http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/local/publications/literature-review.html

9. You might try checking out the Advertising resarch Foundation site www.arfsite.org/. They recently held a conference in NYC on this very topic. That of engaging consumers and the changes in the media mix.
