Hello,
Is there any research data on how much people use the yellow pages to get info about recycling? What headings do people tend to consult (i.e. should recycling info be placed rather under "garbage disposal" than "recycling centers")? Has anybody - especially in the US or even better, Northern California - evaluated if prominent listings in the yellow pages (e.g. display ads in appropriate categories, or a recycling tab/section as part of the phone book) have increased calls to their recycling hot-lines, clicks on their web sites or even resulted in increased recycling? Difference between residential and commercial "customers"? I assume it's difficult to determine how much of the behavior can clearly be attributed to a presence in the yellow pages, unless people are asked for the source of their information.
Thanks,
Stefanie

The City of Winnipeg conducted a survey in 2005 to determine how citizens were accessing our department's information. The most popular source was the White Pages (50%), where the City has specific information pages at the back of the book. The City also has specific pages in the Yellow Pages, but that was much less popular (4%). Our City specific pages encompass more information than just recycling information, however recycling makes up for the bulk of the information provided. Another interesting note is that people ages 55 and over were most likely to use the white pages, while younger citizens were more likely to use the Internet and the City's website.

Stephanie:
I would suggest you check in with Ken Wells from Sonoma County. They have been using the yellow pages for several years to promote recycling.
Here's his address: [email protected].
