Please send me or post web references, program overviews, or personal testimonies about communities who are conducting programs that enable/encourage residents to drive less - especially by using public transit, biking, or walking. We've seen some coastal examples, but are especially interested in midwest models. Any and all ideas appreciated!

Hi Angela & All,
Don't know about midwest (US) models, but here is some info on the TravelSmart programs running in Australia... www.travelsmart.gov.au
Cheers,
Sharon
Angela,
There are various resources, especially if you google lots less cars, less car diet or travelsmart. The Less Car Diet is the rage right now, and you can find lots of it in www.ecoplan.org or www.lotslesscars.org . we also have a publication called public awareness and behavior change in sustainable transport, which is accessible for registered users at www.sutp.org (registration is free and emails are sent only once every two months). You can also check out www.vtpi.org for other resources on this, especially one of their chapters on marketing public transport, etc. You can also contact me directly if you need any help.
Best regards,

Fort Collins, Colorado has an extensive program helping people to drive less including an incentive program where people win prizes for using alternative travel. It's called SmartTrips and is described at http://www.smarttrips.org/communities/communityDetail.aspx?communityID=3
