Hi everyone,
I'm starting to investigate a number of options to reduce car use at on-campus residential colleges and wondered if others have tried the same thing? The things I'm investigating include: - bike fleets for residents to use to get to the local shopping centre or for recreation - shopping shuttle bus to the local supermarket - share car that can be hired out by students (though a car sharing company) I would appreciate any and all info/feedback on other similar projects.
Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,
Those sound like good ideas. Here is a link with some sustainable transportation options that are being used at the University of Florida. You may want to contact the staff in our Office of Sustainability for feedback and suggestions. I've also included a link to a news story about Paris' new bike program. Hi Matt,
You may want to check out the flex car program at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. http://www.flexcar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=464 http://www.cr80news.com/news/2007/03/22/flexcar-expands-to-baltimore-partner s-with-johns-hopkins-university/ Theyve gotten great PR here in Maryland, and students and community residents seem to love the program.
Good luck!

University of California, Davis, has extensive bicycle parking, bike speed limits, and other amenities. Check out: http://www.taps.ucdavis.edu/bicycle/ UC Berkeley is also quite bike friendly with bike paths throughout the city, and plenty of on-campus bicycle parking, including at dormitories. They just put up their first bike plan ever, as of 2006. http://pt.berkeley.edu/transportation_alternatives/bicycle_information/
Hope this helps.

On our visit to about twenty colleges , my wife and I found only one school that had outside storage sheds for bicycles.

Matthew,
I live in Baltimore next to Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Campus and have acquaintances who work for the university. Hopkins has been trying to reduce automobile use for students and employees and is headed toward a car-free campus at Homewood. The school runs shuttles from its satellite locations to the main campus, the medical school and hospital. There are shuttles for students to go to food markets and other nearby attractions. And I noticed a Flexcar site next to campus. Flexcar is a subscription car-share arrangement, great for students who may occasionally need a car, but not need to own one. I don't have a contact at Hopkins, but you can probably find someone through their Web site. flecar has a Web site if you want to learn more.
