Hello,
Does anyone have any ready to go projects for a highschool (Grade 12) project relating to going net-zero? Or a step by step carbon footprint offset project (how to calculate school's footprint and then implement various off-set initiatives). Any help or any leads would be great.

Greetings - a friend just forwarded me a query from this listserve. This is my first time hearing about you folks and my first time posting. In response to the question about High School carbon footprint projects, you should know that a high school student in California's Bay Area, working with Drive Neutral, developed an Excel spreadsheet - called School Neutral - for students to calculate the Carbon Footprint of their school. Students go around and collect data, enter it in, and then can analyze what the biggest factors are. Then they can do a variety of things to try to reduce the footprint. Loads of ideas for curricula on Sustainability from both my organization - Green Schools Initiative (www.greenschools.net) - and Facing the Future (www.facingthefuture.org). You can find a link about the School Neutral program and about how to do other environmental audits at your school here: http://www.greenschools.net/CurriculumIdeas2.htm
There are also other programs out there - Cool Schools, Solar Schools, Green Schools (via Alliance to Save Energy), state programs, local utility programs and more to help schools save energy. Remember that reducing carbon emissions is not only about saving energy directly (like turning off lights) but also about recycling, buying recycled, reducing, etc. So, a recycling program will save energy throughout the supply chain. Having the school buy recycled paper saves energy because of the energy embedded in making the paper. So, think broadly about how the school can reduce its impact. Please feel free to contact me with questions, examples of other school projects, comments, etc.
Thanks!

Hi Martin
We are involved with 13 high schools in NSW Australia and, some of them in their communication with Indian schools, may have the programs you are seeking. Please go to www.ceeaustralia.org. The program is called Global Communities for Sustainability (GCS) and is managed by the Centre for Environment Education Australia in partnership with the Australian Association for Environmental Education.
