Garbage Collection

Prince Edward Island has regulated a mandatory source-separated system with bi-weekly collection for the entire province, and quite effectively. This service is offered in both urban centers and rural communities. We have surveys from our customers and have received high ratings indicating bi-weekly is sufficient.

Is there any written analysis on changing garbage collection system to biweekly (i.e. weekly collection of garbage would no longer be a service option)?

Toronto collects:

- garbage every other week
- recycling (glass, plastic, paper) on the alternate weeks
- compostables (kitchen waste) every week.

The city's Solid Waste Management division may have studies on it.

In the Halifax Regional Municipality, the city also collects garbage every other week, and compostables every alternate week. Recyclables are collected weekly. The city may have more information about this system.

The Regional District of Nanaimo collects garbage bi-weekly on Gabriola Island and weekly on some parts of Vancouver Island. There is a Solid Waste Management Plan on this link http://rdn.bc.ca/cms.asp?wpID=996&wpIDPrint=224&wpCSS=solidsec.

A fortnightly kerbside recycling bin collection service .. A weekly kerbside food organics / green waste bin collection service The system works well and the council is achieving a 63% diversion from landfill through this system approach.
