Apologies if this has been covered too recently - I'm scanning my huge folder of past FSB messages and have found a few pointers, but I thought it would also be helpful to solicit (potentially newer) suggestions. As a last-minute replacement for a disappearing presenter, I have an opportunity to give a 1-hour mini-workshop to some high school students (grades 9-12), hoping to provide them input, suggestions, and tips for running a successful student-driven, school-based, environmental/sustainability project. Is anyone familiar with particular examples of such programs?
Many thanks for any tips & links.

Earth Force is another student-run program. It does need some sort of advisor/interested teacher to help keep things moving. www.earthforce.org

A good program that helps high school students (and grade schools) 'green' their institutions is the Green Flag Schools program, provided by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice. See: www.greenflagschools.org . The program provides resources and educational materials in four different program areas: recycling, non-toxic products (such as 'green' cleaners), Indoor Air Quality and Integrated Pest Management. Students form a green team at their school, comprised of students, staff and administrators, to implement changes in each of the four areas. They also fill out a School Environment Survey that helps them to analyze the areas that the school needs to work on the most. A really fun aspect of the Program is that it offers schools a full-size flag (after they complete the survey) that they can fill in with patches as they are successful in each of the areas. A pilot project of the Green Flag Schools Program, Green Flag, GreenFaith Schools (you will see the icon for this Program through the website above), provides additional resources for faith based schools.
Good luck!

Check out Kids as planners. The site is geared to the adults supervising the programs but there is lots of info about how various student driven projects have developed. www.kidsconsortium.org/
Hi Bob,
Good luck with your workshop. You may want to share examples with your students of their peers who have been honored by our annual Brower Youth Awards over the past 8 years and let those who are currently engaged in leading environmental projects to apply for our 2008 awards. We had an honoree in 2006 from your province. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions. Also, if there are others on the list who know of qualified young environmental leaders, please encourage them to visit the site and to apply.
Best,
Kevin

You may know of these folks based in Woodbridge, ON, but just in case: http://www.earthrangers.ca/
There are two programs which you could look into. The first is Reduce the Juice (HYPERLINK "http://www.reducethejuice.ca"www.reducethejuice.ca) a youth-led group who have successfully installed two renewable energy systems at schools in Shelburne and Orangeville, ON and run community programs as well. The other is a similar group in TO called SWITCH ("http://itstimetoswitch.110mb.com/"http://itstimetoswitch.110mb.com/) who are working on PV installs I believe.
