Can anyone provide me with successful ways that you have conducted celebration stations during Bike to Work Week? What worked and what didn't work for you? Thanks for your help.

Thank you Yves. I appreciate the input. Can you tell me more about your helmet giveaway? How did you determine who received them? How many did you give away? Did someone supply these to you or did you have to purchase them?
Thanks,
Wendy

We also have an event each year. Previously we've had a breakfast station and given away water bottles. This year we are also looking into renting portable showers for those who take alternative transportation methods to work. You may also contact bikesonoma.org for more ideas.

San Jose's helmet giveaway was funded through a State of California grant (Transportation Development Act, Article 3). Bicyclists visiting the event site (in front our main library/university) were fitted with helmets, and those in need were also provided with headlights and tail lights (100 units were installed.
Let me know if you need more info.

Yves,
Can this helmet give-away work for San Carlos (20 miles north of San Jose)? We participate in the bike to work day in May.

Last year in New Hampshire there were many events around the state. At my workplace we have a "commuter breakfast" and check-in station. After biking or walking to work, people can enjoy water, juice, coffee and a bagel or piece of fruit. A brief questionnaire is distributed to gather info about obstacles or areas for improvement. A large map is used to identify where peoples' trips originated. We have raffle prizes and some photo opportunities! The event seems to be growing each year. This will be the 7th year for our event!

Thank you Barbara for your posting. I like your idea about posting a map.
Mary I see that you used portable showers. How many took advantage of the portable showers?
Thanks everyone for your comments on my posting.
Cheers,
Wendy

Opening the streets to bikes is always the best way to get more people to ride to work (or anywhere). Fear of death by car is always a bit more of a deterrent than arriving at work a little moist or having trouble locking up somewhere.

Portable showers will be a new for this year's event (May 14th), so I can't give you figures on their use. However, our idea is if we get a good response on the rented showers to look into the feasibility of permanent ones.

I would recommend that you contact the City of San Carlos, Department of Parks and Recreation. They would have knowledge of grant sources and may wish to manage a similar effort.

Wendy, Are you aware of Bike to Work BC? http://biketowork.ca/ Also check out the BTW program offered by the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition. http://vacc.bc.ca/index.php?task=btw.main There is a feature on the VACC BTW website that allows particants to record their commutes by drawing their routes on a map - their distance, etc. is calculated. Hope that helps.

Re: comment 6
Barbara, would you be willing to share the questionnaire you distribute to participants about obstacles or areas for improvement? I was planning on doing something similar for my Bike to Work Day event, and it would be very helpful to review an example.
You can post it here as I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see it, or if you prefer, you can send it to me privately. My contact info should be in my profile.
Great discussion everyone!

San Jose hosts a Bike to Work event each year. Recharging Stations are set up around town. Bicyclists are offered snacks, water and information about our bikeways and trail network.
Several months ago, we hosted a bike helmet giveaway. This was a good opportunity to promote biking and support safe enjoyment of our facilties.
