A colleague and I are currently working on a research project on engaging youth in sustainability issues and are trying to put a list together of youth-based sustainability initiatives. We are predominantly focusing our research on adolescents. If you know of any youth programs that address environmental issues we would greatly appreciate if you could pass along the name of the program and any reports or web links you may have that would provide a description of the program (we are looking for a variety of programs, from youth-led ones to those involve collaboration between youth and adults).
Many thanks!

Hi Jennifer
Check out www.wearemanyfestival.com
We are Many (WAM) are a Youth-based coalition who put on a free festival in Saskatoon last summer highlighting environmental sustainability. They attracted over 10,000 people and some big name acts. The festival is done, but WAM are still going strong working with youth and the city on various sustainability issues such as transport and bottled water.

Hi Jennifer,
Jane Goodall Institute's Roots and Shoots program empowers and celebrates youth at all ages who are taking environmental action.
"The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happenfor our communities, for animals and for the environment. With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100 countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better world. Young people identify problems in their communities and take action. Through service projects, youth-led campaigns and an interactive website, Roots & Shoots members are making a difference across the globe." www.rootsandshoots.org

Hi Jennifer,
in Victoria, Australia, we have developed a program for primary school students (ages 11-12) and secondary school students (ages 13-16) called Tomorrow's Leaders for Sustainability to help students develop their leadership potential and skills in the context of sustainability through hands-on activities and meaningful projects. As well as training teachers and educators in the program's approach, we are also runnning several models in capacity building between schools, community groups and local businesses. You can find out more about the program at www.leadersforsustainability.com

You should check out a group called SustainUS - a nonprofit in the US that has been run by youth 26 and under for the past seven years. I used to be their director, so I'm a bit biased, but they do great work!
