I have been engaged by a client here in Melbourne to conduct an assessment of the extent to which sustainability is embedded in the culture of the organisation. Step 1 is to identify a measurement approach to achieve this aim.
I am interested to see what is out there in the way of established tools. Is anybody aware of any existing approach to assessing the extent to which sustainability is embedded in the culture of the organisation?

Hi Tim,
We've aligned our Sustainability Strategy (and subsequent Reporting) with the strategic direction of our University to be consistent with other strategy documents, such as the Learning and Teaching Plan, the Sustainability Indicator Framework is comprised of the domains People, Planet and Participation. We assess our performance against KPIs within each of these domains - http://www.mq.edu.au/sustainability/sustainabilityreporting.html.
There is also the LiFE index (Learning in Future Environments) due for release in Jan 2012 - a comprehensive performance improvement system developed specifically to help colleges and universities to manage, measure, improve and promote their social responsibility and sustainability performance. http://www.thelifeindex.com.au/

Thanks guys. When I originally posted this about 18 months ago, it appeared there was not a lot around which provided a robust measure of sustainability in the culture of organisations. Since then I have developed a tool for doing so, which measures the key individual and organisational enablers of sustainability in the culture. We administer (and license) an on-line culture assessment tool that allows companies to assess 6 dimensions that relate to readiness to execute sustainable strategies. We have conducted two studies to validate the instrument against objective indicators of success with sustainable strategies. We are continuing to grow the data base and to conduct validation studies.
