I am interested in using CBSM techniques to encourage people to volunteer for their local environmental community group. In particular, I would like to encourage people living close to a Landcare site to volunteer one Sunday per month.
Does anyway know of a similar case study for effectively changing rates of volunteerism? Or to support a community group through recruiting and retaining volunteers?

Hi Laura, The group Save Our Waterways Now works on urban creeks in the Brisbane North Western catchments. They use a similar model - seeking to have people work in an area on a regular basis and gaining ownership of that area of the creek. Their website is www.saveourwaterwaysnow.com.au. Their approach is that they have some leaders who provide support and information to newbies. They have a nursery and host of volunteers who work there a couple of times per week. The key to the success of the group is to go with the energy and ensure that volunteers are given adequate training and resources to do what they need to do. The group is completely voluntary but raises funds for a "crack" team to help clean up really difficult areas if there is energy from local people to keep working on it. They have a bush regenerators handbook as well on the website called the Creek in My Backyard. Good luck.
