It seems that most people these days (at least in WA State), recycle TOO much and end up inadvertently contaminating the recycle stream with things like styrafoam, glass and un-recyclable plastics like Starbucks cups. We have a client who wants to address the issue in their City by updating their approach and outreach materials.
I am looking for any target audience research, successful programs, created materials or general insight, to encourage residents who recycle using a co-mingled recycle container at their home (everything goes in one tall bin) to reduce contamination of the recycle stream.

Not adjacent to bins. The items are taped to the table in the right category, I believe . .or maybe sometimes in a big box and people have to sort them into red, green, yellow parts of table. (Did you see the poster that is given out at the same time, to put on refrigerator?). So these items are just clean "samples", not to be tossed, but saved for the display table.
It works better if someone is there to answer questions but the version where the items are taped to the table cloth is self-explanatory, basically the poster in "3-D".

Our town uses this little handout which helps differentiate what IS/IS NOT recyclable. It is color-coded: green, red, yellow.

At city festivals, we have a real table with the items laid out in the same pattern, red tablecloth, green table cloth, yellow tablecloth. It seems to be helping people understand what NOT to toss in.
