Hello everybody,
I 've just started working on a web-based campaign aiming to promote cycling to work or school (instead of driving). If you are aware any good examples of such campaigns, I would be most grateful if you could point them out to me.
Do you propose any particular on-line tool? Any good examples of social media/community marketing from other fields of social marketing are most welcome as well.
Many thanks in advance!

Web Campaigns Promoting Bicycle Commuting

Hi Jernej,
There was a recent launch of a new sustainable transportation web tool here: www.hastebc.org
On it there are planning tools and stories to help schools set up a sustainable (hike, bike, bus or carpool) transportation campaigns (customized). There is also seed funding and a calculator to help connect transportation to carbon emissions. This seems to be working really well for schools.
I have also seen some success with "Commuter Challenges" or "Hike, Bike or Bus" weeks targeted at the working world - in particular large companies like to get engaged in these challenges.
I hope that is helpful!

Hi Jernej
A specific example here in Oz of a schools-based program is the "Walking School Bus" initiative (http://www.travelsmart.gov.au/schools/schools2.html). As was suggested by the other respondents, this is not a unique idea by any means, however you'll find step-by-step guides etc on the website above.
For commuters, I think one of the most advanced programs I've come across is Transport for London's "A new way to work" program - you'll find loads of materials under the following website:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandschemes/workplacetravelplanning/7447.aspx
Finally, in support of a more consistent approach to workplace travel planning, there has been a national standard recently released in the UK that may be worth investigating (PAS 500/2008 National Spec for Travel Plans):

Hope this helps and good luck for your quest

Hi Jernej
At Darebin City Council here in Victoria, Australia, we've been running our Going Places program for 3 years. It's a sustainable travel reward scheme. You can see it here: www.goingplaces.darebin.vic.gov.au
It was inspired by the Way To Go program: http://www.waytogoclub.com/

Hi Jernej,
There are plenty of examples out there if you do a bit of google searching. The comment that I would make is that in my experience this type of behaviour change really needs to involve engagement with the audience; empowering / facilitating motivated members of the audience to encourage their peers to take action. A web tool can support this, but I really think that travel change is something that involves working through travel options for people in a fairly customised way (there isn't really a one size fits all as people live in different places & have different needs & barriers). You also need to consider how to monitor / evaluate the effect of the website.
Have a look at the school and workplace travel planning that Transport for London do - www.anewwaytowork.org and also the DfT's Smarter Choices work. TfL has guidance on delivering travel plans for both audiences.
In terms of specific web tools somethings to consider are a carbon savings calculator & a calorie counter to act as motivators.
Good luck,
Alexis
