Hello all,
I am organizing a workshop related to social marketing and it's applications for the conservation of turtle species at risk. I am hoping to elist a few speakers that could speak about interesting strategies that could be applied, effective marketing campaigns, and the use of various types of media. The workshop will be held at the Toronto Zoo at the end of March. Any suggestions you may have for speakers would be greatly appreciated.

HI Erin
I would recommend Prof Sam Ham from University of Idaho. He has done much work in thematic communication for behaviour change, focussing on ecotourism and species conservation.

Hi Erin,
Jeff Leggo at St. Lawrence Islands National Park, between Kingston and Brockville, Ontario has done a lot of work with herpetiles, including turtles. Also with species at risk in general in the National Park, and the greater park ecosystem. You can connect with him through the park # at 613-923-5261. He's a good speaker in general on the issue of turtles in southern Ontario, and also on conservation efforts, including social marketing.

Hello again, I forgot to mention that Joan Chamberlain at the Trent-Severn Waterway, or one of the ecosystem specialists at Georgian Bay Islands National Park, or Bruce-Fathom Five National Park may be able to help as well.

Although the resource specialist I am recommending is not an expert in turtle conservation science, he is at CBSM related to Aquatic Invasive-Nuisance Species. His name is Joe Starinchak and he works at the US Fish and Wildlife Service, out of Arlington, VA. He has several ongoing campaigns underway: Protect Your Waters, Habitattitude, and RxSmart.

If available, Cathy Sakas is a very entertaining and engaging speaker with a unique background, having lived on a research sub and more. She is with NOAA Grays Reef National Marine Sanctuary in Savannah, GA. I worked with her on some activities related to the Natural South program on Turner South (after being interviewed as part of the first episode -- on sea turtles -- she was asked to become the host of the TV show we sponsored for 3 yrs!). I have had her speak to groups to engage them on several conservation education topics.
This link has a pretty good description of her background (near bottom of page):
