In Melbourne, Australia, we're looking to kick off an initiative in this area too. 'Greening the West' will see us working with our local councils and health department on urban forestation and vegetation projects in Melbourne's western suburbs. We believe green, healthy spaces will contribute to improved community health, so together we will prioritise the right spaces for renewal where the greatest positive community impact can be achieved. We're just getting started and have some information and resources here: www.planbig.com.au/greening-the-west

Clare: Thank you for the heads-up on work in Australia. I note that you're affiliated with the Water interests in the region and can you tell me more about the relationship you've identified for Greening the West and City West Water? I expect I understand -- it would be interesting to know if you have a case study or a report about this linkage. In advance, thanks.
Jay: Thank you for the link to the case study on shade tree planting ... I'll also take time to review your corporate site ... intriguing.
Best wishes to both from College Park, MD

The City of Surrey (outside of Vancouver, Canada) has a long-standing community tree planting program called Releaf (http://www.surrey.ca/culture-recreation/504.aspx) to engage residents in tree planting in our local parks. Groups (primarily elementary school classes, but also Girl Guides/Scouts, corporate groups, youth groups, clubs and others) can plant shade trees in park passive pareas and along boulevards, as well as native trees and shrubs in natural area parks. We also hold drop-in planting events for individuals and families on the weekends.

Greetings to you all.
You might find some good models from the Bushcare and Landcre movements in Australia. There are litrally thousands of groups, many of them urban which are involved in greening projects. Many of these are revegetation focussed, but in urban areas, there are many bush regeneration projects, using natural ecological resilience to restore bushland areas and then undertaking supplementary plantings in parks and streets to enhance the ecological outcomes. Programs and prjects are supported by NGOs, local state and Australian governments. A good web search using the terms bushcare and landcare will get you good info, but have a look at
www.aabr.org.au - Australian Association of Bush Regenerators. links to programs and hosting the Volunteer Coordinators Network.. good guidelines.
http://www.bushcare.org.au/ Kuringgai Bushcare... a good local council program
http://www.sydney.cma.nsw.gov.au/our-projects/sydney-community-bushcare-program.html - an overview of programs and projects in the Sydney region. http://www.greeningaustralia.org.au/ and http://www.landcareonline.com.au/ - good program info
Hope this helps... more than happy to provide anyone with more info

Hi Carrie, glad to be of help. City West Water is one of three water retailers in Melbourne. Our connection to this project is a combination of factors - our business is very driven by a sustainability agenda, we are well connected to local councils and government and have strong contacts and resources, our service area includes some vulnerable and poor health outcomes communities that we are hoping to assist through improving passive rec space, and perhaps most importantly, we are the custodians of the greatest asset when it comes to successfully establishing and maintaining trees - water! We're hoping to use our non potable resources - recycled/storm/water etc to ensure the trees thrive.

Hi again,
I should have mentioned that in addition to ecological plantings and regen we have been funding a growing number of urban food plantings, both in gardens and food trees as street trees.

I am working in an Eastern US City on our tree project - studying tree planting barriers. As part of our Focus Group, We would like to evoke emotional responses through photographs. Would you have any photos available showing properties without trees, then photoshopped in trees? Have you used this photo technique in your focus groups?
Would anyone have any photographs to share with us? We are hoping to use several through a power point - and verbal response.
Thanks,
Raquel
