We kicked off a fun Earth Day Challenge that ends today. We placed energy harvesting bikes at the CSU campus and had students ride for eight hours; the bikes were hooked up to a LED computer which displayed energy and transportation tips and the energy to a non profit in town (e.g. Bike Coop. We also had people sign a pledge with ten transportaion tips and I calculated $ and environmental savings.
Also I am teaching the Sustainability for Municipality class for CU - Boulder 9-5 June 3rd. Come for a visit!

We did a similar thing here in Wales when we hosted the Urdd Eisteddfod (a Welsh Language arts festival for children)at llanerchaeron. We used a rowing machine and did it as a competition as to who could produce the most electricity. They got certificates saying what their efforts would have done, run a computer for an hour or boiled so much water for instance, I attach a photo. I have also seen WWF doing it at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show with two bikes where the contestants raced against each other to see who can light the most lights, very noisy and great fun.

The bikes are Human Dynamo bikes and the device that converts from DC to AC is called the FIGG.

Rosemarie - I'd be interested in where you got the bikes from. Thanks, Jill
