Exposure to radon gas is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, but very easy and inexpensive to detect with a radon detector. I'm looking for any information or research on the reasons that people may choose not to test their homes. Any information or research on why people do not do that which they know to be good for their health is probably useful. This may help us direct our radon awareness program.

Thank you for the information. The links to the documents referenced are stale, however there is a contact email on the site. If you know of another source for these documents, they might be very useful. The description does sound like they may provide some insight. Thanks again!

Hello Kim,
Our non-profit, Citizens for Clean Air in Pueblo, has been raising community awareness about radon for approximately three years now. We even supply free radon test kits, but find quite a bit of resistance in some circumstances. Most of it has to do with not understanding the issue fully.
1.) People are afraid that finding elevated radon levels will affect the resale of their home. Or, they are afraid they will have to move out of their home if they find elevated levels.
2.) Some people hold on to a what I dont know wont hurt me attitude. Its another issue to worry about, and so some people just avoid it. Others dont have the financial resources to deal with the problem, so theyd rather just not know.
3.) A surprising number of people believe that low-levels of radiation are good for you.
We would be happy to talk with you about our work if you would like.

also search for projects in Cornwall where radon is a real problem. The mention of confidentiality on these sites may lead us to beleive that people don't want to see their house prices plummet,
