Hi all, If you’ve ever attended or organized a clothing swap, you might find GrowNYC’s “Hosting your own swap” DIY guide interesting. As a reminder, a ‘swap’ is an event where a community—whether a private group of friends or citizens in a public setting, for example—gathers to exchange items they no longer want or need for items that they would like to take home, at zero cost. The guide includes a planning worksheet, site outreach letter, event materials guide, volunteer training document, outreach and budget sections, and an additional resources list. All of this is well organized and intuitive. The “Hosting your own swap” DIY guide is attached, for your reference.
In terms of shifting behaviours towards more reuse, leading high quality reuse events can establish social norms in a neighbourhood. Simply by attending these events and engaging in reuse behaviours, urban citizens may come to view themselves as people who care about environmental sustainability. This is known as self-perception theory. It is essentially the idea that behaviours change attitudes, as opposed to the other way around. For those of you who live in southwestern Ontario, there’s a free clothing swap coming up in Kitchener on Saturday, August 17th from 1 – 3pm. Click here to register.
